Breakfast fundraiser helps Special Olympics

Wilson Daily Times - 3/4/2019

March 04-- Mar. 4--The community rallied for a cause Saturday and turned out in support of Wilson County Special Olympics.

Families headed out for the fourth annual "Scram" breakfast fundraiser at the Wilson Doughnut Shop on Tarboro Street. The $5 breakfast included scrambled sausage, egg and cheese with diners' choice of bread and drink.

"It's one of our biggest fundraisers for Wilson County Special Olympics," said Braxton Patterson, programs and marketing supervisor for the city of Wilson Parks and Recreation Department. "The community support is always big with this."

Patterson said organizers are grateful for the Wilson Doughnut Shop partnership.

"It's an all-around community effort," Patterson said.

The money raised supports Special Olympics programs in Wilson, including the spring track and field games as well as soccer, basketball and volleyball games. Proceeds also support local Special Olympians who compete at the state level.

"This is their opportunity to participate in an athletic competition that they normally might not get to participate in," Patterson said. "It's at no cost to them. They just get to go and experience."

The annual breakfast has raised thousands of dollars over the past four years. Nearly two dozen Jeeps were also lined up outside the bakery and restaurant Saturday morning. Members of the Coastal Plains Jeep Club of Eastern North Carolina said they attend the fundraiser each year.

"It's a great time for us to come together as a group and fellowship and support a good cause," said Odis Daughtridge, president of the Coastal Plains Jeep Club. "That's what we're all about -- helping each other and helping the community."

This year's Wilson County Special Olympics is planned for April 18 at Hunt High School.
