Special Olympics Oceanside offers year-round sports programs for individuals with an intellectual disability.
It is set to start its fall programs that include swimming, basketball, bowling, curling and club fit.
However, the group is still looking for volunteers to help out particular in swimming. They need help desperately in the swimming program, which is about to start soon.
If you are interested in helping out as a coach or a volunteer, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 250-954-7137.
Meanwhile, the organization is set to host its biggest fundraiser for the year, the Special Olympics Oceanside's Annual Charity Golf Tournament that will be hosted by Pheasant Glen Golf Resort, Sept. 14. And they need you.
One hundred per cent of all funds raised from the tournament will go towards the Special Olympics Oceanside athletes and provide funds needed to run all of the sports programs for the year. It's a win-win for the athletes and participants. The public is invited to participate by entering the fun tournament, attending the dinner, or by taking advantage of the many other opportunities to show support through hole sponsorships, and donations of silent auction items, golf prizes, or cash donations.
Cost is $99 per player which includes 18 holes of golf and dinner as well as the opportunity to win some great prizes.
Among the many amazing donated prizes for our live and silent auctions are air tickets from WestJet, a tandem sky dive and, a Hole-In-One prize of a 2019 vehicle from Duncan Hyundai.
Since 1980, Special Olympics BC has been committed to providing individuals with intellectual disabilities the opportunity to enhance their life and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences. The programs give athletes the chance to gain skills – in sports and in life – and to improve their health while enjoying training that could take them to competitions at local, regional, national and international levels.
The benefits go well beyond the basics. Through Special Olympics, athletes experience joy and acceptance, cultivate friendships and self-confidence, and feel empowered to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals.
Special Olympics Oceanside offers year-round sport programs for athletes who live in the Oceanside area from Nanoose Bay to Deep Bay. They currently provide training and competition in ten individual and team sports including swimming, curling, club fit, bowling, basketball, softball, golf, track and field, soccer and bocce for 48 athletes ages 15 to 60.
These programs bring pride, accomplishment, and growth for athletes and volunteers alike.
