A cappella competition supports foundation

High Point Enterprise - 3/30/2017

March 30--HIGH POINT -- A new, local nonprofit will hold an a cappella competition in early April to honor the memory of their son.

Richard Fuqua's son was diagnosed with autism when he was 5 and died in January 2016 at the age of 14 from a seizure disorder.

"We wanted to create an entity that would assist other individuals and children with autism to help improve their quality of life through providing resources for recreation opportunities, education opportunities, possibly nutritional opportunities -- really to help them improve their quality of life," Fuqua said.

Fuqua and his wife created the 501(c)3 nonprofit R. Allen Fuqua Foundation last year. The foundation seeks to improve the quality of life for those living with autism.

Fuqua said they wanted to hold a fundraiser where they could not only share Allen's love for a cappella, but could also create a contest out of it, all while raising money for the cause.

His son had access a lot of opportunities, he said, but acknowledge that not everybody has those same chances. The foundation will help open the door for them, he said.

All of the funds raised at the a cappella competition on April 8 will support the nonprofit to help individuals with autism. That may come in the form of sponsoring an autistic child to take therapeutic horseback riding lessons, something Allen loved, or may help an adult with training to enhance a skill and earn income.

It's the foundation's first major fundraising event, and Fuqua said he hopes to have as many participants and attendees as possible. Seven a cappella groups are already signed up to compete, including Eternal Praise, University of North Carolina Greensboro Spartones, a barbershop group and more. There's room for two or three more, he said.

Groups interested in participating can email rallenfuquafndn@gmail.com. The groups are asked to make a $100 donation to the foundation, but benefactors are available if they're unable to pay.
