Special Olympics seeks volunteers

Sept. 11--MT. VERNON -- The call is going out for volunteers to help with the Special Olympics Area 14 Fall Bowling Tournament.

The annual event brings Special Olympics athletes together to compete at the local level to try for a chance to advance to the Sectional Bowling Tournament in November. The local tournament is held from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 19 at Nu-Bowl Lanes in Mt. Vernon.

Area 14 serves 560 individuals with developmental disabilities in Jefferson, Hamilton, Edwards, Gallatin, Hardin, Marion, Pope, Saline, Wabash, Wayne and White counties. About 140 athletes are expected to complete in the Fall Bowling Tournament.

Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit organization that offers year-round training and competition in 18 sports for nearly 22,000 athletes from 8 years and older with intellectual disabilities. The programs are designed to enhance physical fitness, motor skills, self-confidence and social skills as well as encourage family and community support of their abilities.
