Huntsville hairstylists giving free haircuts to those with autism

Huntsville Item - 4/5/2018

April 05--For young children, teenagers and adults with autism, doing everyday tasks such as getting a haircut can be challenging, but three stylists at The Facemaker Salon are wanting to lend a helping hand.

Throughout the month of April, which is known as Autism Awareness Month, Jewlia Miller, Irma Salazar and Soco Zuniga are offering free haircuts to those with autism in an effort to help spread autism awareness, as well as provide a safe and peaceful environment.

"We've dealt with lots of kids with special needs and you build bonds with these kids," Miller said. "You just want them to feel comfortable and have a place where they can come and they know who you are and are just able to be comfortable in their own skin. We know a lot of the kids have issues with being touched, issues with sound and staying in one spot. There's a lot that goes into it that we were completely unaware of before meeting moms and kids and learning more about it. This is something that is definitely in our hearts and we want to bring awareness to it."

It's the second year the stylists have offered the free haircuts, which include wash, cut and style, and they remember the feedback they received from parents and kids alike. Miller recalls a young girl named Bethanie who came in last year for a haircut with her mother.

"One of the girls was Bethanie and her mom was completely melted by the whole thing," Miller said. "We washed her hair, we cut it and styled it, we took pictures together and Bethanie doesn't like to be touched. For her mom to see her be completely fine with me touching her and taking photos with her, her mom just completely melted. She was just happy and told her mom that she felt normal."

Miller explains that the haircuts are given upstairs, away from the noise and bustle of the salon floor to help the children and adults feel more relaxed.

Those wanting to bring in a loved one for a haircut are encouraged to book an appointment in advance by calling The Facemaker Salon at (936) 295-3800.
